The New 2012 Prius c!

If you haven’t had the chance to take a look at the newest addition to the Prius family, here’s your opportunity! The smallest Prius yet is due to come out sometime this year. It might be 19 inches shorter than its family but it still has the great MPG, you have come to expect from the 3rd Generation Prius. It has an estimated 53 MPG in the city, while not having to use a plug. Plus it’s also the least expensive one! The base sticker price for this vehicle is around 20k!

Like the Camry, another best seller for Toyota, the Prius c is being equipped with Entune. In case you haven’t heard, Entune is a new system that contains music, food and movie reservations with Bluetooth for hands-free entertainment. “I only buy American made cars.” How often have you heard that statement? Working at a Toyota dealer, I feel like I hear that a lot. It is so important to support the country we love and live in! And we at Toyota agree! Did you know that many Toyota’s are made in the good ol’ USA? Currently, the Camry, Avalon, Sienna and the two trucks are made here, on American soil; and of course, you can’t forget about the Corolla!

In the small town of Blue Springs, Mississippi, the new 2012 Black Corolla is being produced! It has supplied the town and surrounding neighborhoods with 1,500 jobs and soon that number will be increasing by 500 more employees! The plant officially opened its doors yesterday after years of being put off since 2007 because of the recession. This 1.3 billion dollar plant has the capacity to put out 150,000 cars. Toyota has been working on its image for a while now, and is investing in the towns that make America great.

With all the advancing technology in the world today, Toyota is proud to be coming out with some rather cool innovations! There are a couple that are hitting the news these days. One of them is PCS. Which is what you may ask? The official name for it is Pre-Collision System and its going to make the world a safer place for drivers! It’s going to make a huge difference in the way accidents are prevented. And this is how it works! While using this system, your call will actually be able to stop before hitting something by sensing it. It will use a host of cameras and heat sensors to detect trouble ahead of the vehicle.

The next step after this is going to a car that drives all by itself! Now that is going to be something that truly helps keep the roads safe! All the teenagers should be getting that car first and foremost. Apparently, Toyota is thinking ahead and trying to come up the technology for that as well. Think I, Robot; when everything is directed by computers…Don’t worry the robots at Toyota, they won’t be taking over the world, just the road!

Another idea that’s new will make traveling with children so much easier; is having touch screen windows with augmented reality interface. This is a touch screen that will allow the passenger to do a number of things. These are being tested by Toyota right now and there’s no telling when they will be featured on our vehicles. With this technology, you can see how far something is from your vehicle, see pronunciations of things that are being passed. The windows will just be clear touch screen that you allow you to drag items and bring them closer to the vehicle. It will also let you draw on the window itself!

Growing a Greener World (or at least a greener work space)

Back when vegetables were only found in the frozen or canned section of the grocery store, my father and owner of Oak Lawn Toyota always had his fresh vegetable garden in our backyard. Before the local and organic food movement began, Ronnie was out in the garden nurturing his own local produce. Tomatoes, Swiss Chard, Green Peppers, Red Peppers, Habanero Peppers, Herbs and even Corn...it is only the start of what we ate in our short-seasoned Chicago Summer; straight out of our own garden.

In my efforts to create a greener world, I thought this season would be a good time to start a vegetable garden here at Oak Lawn Toyota. With the small amount of space that isn't covered by pure machinery, I found a perfect spot with Southern Sun Exposure. Because it was my first experience gardening, I thought I would take it easy and start with two tomato plants, and two basil plants. After our long 4th of July Weekend, and to my surprise...two baby green tomatoes greeted me this morning.

For those of you who garden, when you see your vegetables grow after all the work you spent planting and then watering; to see the first vegetable pop-up feels like giving birth. I actually did it! I've given life to THE PLANT KINGDOM!

If anything, it is my small effort to help with the environment and create local produce for the members of Oak Lawn Toyota. If any of you have started vegetable gardens this summer, please share your stories and pictures!

“Going Green” You’ve heard the phrase, and nowadays it’s everything you can do to make the environment better. This includes the kind of cars that you can buy, how you can recycle and being a more responsible human being. We are starting to see more and more hybrid cars on the road. And now Toyota is bringing you even more opportunities to purchase one! Prius is now going PLURAL! That’s right, later this year; Toyota will be launching the Prius V. This car is going to have more room for kids and cargo! It will have all the great features of the third generation Prius but is built towards families. The kids want to go green too! It will be loaded with infotainment package with Entune and seats that recline and slide to accommodate.

Then early next year be expecting two more cars in the Prius family! The C Concept will be hitting the streets in the spring. This is meant to be the most affordable and stylish prius yet. It is designed for driving in the city and will be great for whipping around those bulky cabbies in Chicago!

One of the most exciting things happening at Toyota is going to be the new Plug-In Prius! With this addition to the family, you are able to plug it in and with an hour and a half to three hours, and you are ready to go! With the option for EV mode, the Plug-In might be able to go up to 475 miles at a time!!!! Be prepared, at the end of this year you will be able to get your name on a list for this new car! Spaces are going to go fast!

New cars are always an exciting thing at Toyota, but these new Prius models are going to blow the other hybrids out of the water! Since Toyota was one of the firsts to make the hybrids, it makes sense that we are constantly upgrading and welcoming a new generation of hybrids into our family. Every day it seems that there are new foundations that are popping up that need support. They are all well-deserving and well worth any money or support that you can spare. In this day and age it’s hard to see out of our own situation but it’s important to do so. Here is your big opportunity to help non-profit organizations with the click of your mouse. Toyota is helping you to help those foundations that are closest to your heart with the “Toyota 100 Cars for Good”.

Every day for 100 days, you will get the opportunity to vote for 1 of 5 foundations. There are 5 new foundations that get posted every day. Each one has a bio telling you what they do and why they do it. They then have a video telling you why they need a car and what the exact role it will play. Be prepared and have a box of tissues next to you while watching some of the videos, since they do tug on the heartstrings!

Driving with Toyota

Ever been driving down the streets of a busy city and found yourself turning onto a one-way street accidentally? It’s TERRIFYING! There is the moment of panic where you are trying to figure out where you are going to turn around and how you are going to avoid the oncoming cars.

What if in that moment of panic your car told you what was happening? Would you be less panicked? That is what Toyota is hoping for! They are designing a program that will be installed in an optional navigational system, available in Japan this month!

This system will especially help casualty and accident percentages in the U.S. This is a repeating problem on busy highways and is a complicated problem to fix. Most of these violations and accidents happen when drivers try to make illegal U-turns and do not use the correct ramps to get on and off the highway. This is a scary problem that can be very dangerous for the other people out on the roads. Toyota is hoping that this new system will work better than other programs before it, which included horns and flashing lights above wrong way signs. These proved to be very ineffective and more annoying than actually helpful.

There is the chance that drivers will ignore these alerts. Toyota is hopeful that using both vocal and visual warnings, it will be more effective than anything else that has been tried in the past.

This system will be coming out to the United States at some point in the near future! So keep your eyes and ears open for it!

Toyota Friend is coming!

For all you tech savvy people out there, you are aware of all the convenient options that your Smartphone has available, and now Toyota has realized it too! Listen to this new app that’s going to better help our Toyota customers! It’s called “Toyota Friend” and is focused on making your life easier! How does it work, you may ask? Once you download the app, a “tweet-like” message will be sent to your Smartphone. This message will then update you on the upcoming service that the car may need.

“Using Toyota Friend, vehicles can transmit oil level, tire pressure, and battery charge data, and owners can exchange information on environmentally friendly driving methods and recommended destinations.” It will also help customers to schedule any maintenance that needs to be done on the car. It’s even possible to turn on the seat warmers in the winter! Now that’s a neat and useful idea especially with the winters that we have here in Chicago!

Owners will be able to use this tool to stay connected with other app users as well. It will also connect to other social networks such as; Facebook, Twitter and all the other social networks out there! This tool shows that Toyota is not going to be left behind in this technology-centered world. They are on the hunt for the newest and best ideas out there! Make sure to keep your eyes out for this app, its big debut is going to be next year in Japan! And we can’t wait for it to come to the USA! Hope for Japan

There have been many victims from this month's earthquake and resultant tsunami disaster in Japan. Although there have been no reported injuries of Toyota employees in Japan, their lives have been greatly affected. The Toyota community worldwide has come up with many different ways to help the victims. On March 12, Toyota Motor Coporpation in Japan began sending medical and emergency supplies, including food and water to the victims of the devestation. Emergency Housing is also being planned by Toyota to provide nearly 500 apartments for people evacuated from affected areas. They are providing one hundred cars as well, for local government authorities to use in the areas hardest hit by the disaster.

Toyota also just launched “Hope for Japan”, a website where anyone can contribute to the American Red Cross relief efforts and share messages of hope. We truly thank everyone who has contributed to the relief effort in Japan. There has been more than $5 million donated so far, $1.5 coming from North America, and another $1.5 from Toyota’s employees, dealers, business partners, and friends across North America. Toyota in Japan, has donated about $3.75 million to support the relief effort as well. There are also other major fundraising projects that have been held, such as walk-a-thons in San Antonio, TX and Lexington, KY which raised nearly $60,000 for the relief efforts in Japan.

Although, there have been no reported injuries at Toyotas operations, we continue keep our friends, colleagues, and the people of Japan in our prayers. A Tribute to Wilbert Montes

If you have ever spent any time wandering around Oak Lawn Toyota, you have most likely stepped foot in our Parts and Service departments. The coffee, the magazines, the TV (most likely switched to some trashy daytime courtroom drama) and the vending machines decorate the edges of the waiting room. But let's face it, you're never there for the coffee and entertainment, you're there because you need an oil change or a new gear shift knob for your car. And if you've had the opportunity to buy a new part, you've most likely met Wilbert Montes. He was the friendly voice on the other side of the phone, the warm smile greeting you at the Part's window and the all-around friendliest man helping you.

I have had the sincerest honor to know Wilbert Montes all my life. As children, my younger sister Diana and I would spend Saturdays at work with my dad. Neither of us was tall enough to see over the counter Wilbert sat behind, so my dad would take turns picking up each of us so we could say hi to Wilbert. Most visits to Oak Lawn Toyota began and ended with a trip to Wilbert's Parts department window. Some days he would sneak us a donut or a sucker, while other days he'd listen to us babble about a new doll we brought with us that day. With age, brought height, and I didn't need my dad to lift me over that counter any longer—I’d skip over to the Part’s window and talk off Wilbert’s ear. Never once did he see me as a burden or complain about my company as he worked. He sat there with a grin on his face and let me be a playful kid.

Over the most recent years, Wilbert would say, “Have you grown since last time?” My response was often the same, “No, I think it’s my shoes.” I’d slip off one heel and show it to him and in amazement he’d ask how I walked in such tall shoes, both of us laughing at my strange wardrobe choice. I watched his banter with customers and saw the same friendly disposition. He treated everyone the same, with respect and kindness. His demeanor was incredibly gentle and kind. He had an unassuming presence about him yet his enthusiasm sparkled and lit up Oak Lawn Toyota.

Wilbert began working with my dad, Ronald Colosimo, in the 70s at Broadway Dodge—long before Oak Lawn Toyota. Their work relationship quickly blossomed into a loyal friendship and as the years passed, Wilbert became a part of the Colosimo family. In his 40 years working alongside my father, Wilbert Montes accomplished marvelous things! He won over (an astounding!!) ten “Service and Parts Excellence Awards.” Wilbert’s superb work ethic combined with his elaborate skills and sharp intellect helped weave the fabric that is Oak Lawn Toyota. The loss of Wilbert Montes is extremely sad for all of us at Oak Lawn Toyota. He is truly irreplaceable.

Walking the halls of Oak Lawn Toyota will never be the same without a sweet wave from Wilbert. Lucky for me, his smile is forever engrained in my memory and I can take that with me every time I head over to the Parts department. This Holiday Season, please help us help the less fortunate by donating new, unwrapped toys! This toy drive will benefit Restoration Ministries' Christmas Toy Store, which is on December 15th.

At the Restoration Ministries' Toy Store, parents who would otherwise struggle to get their children Christmas presents, can shop from a wide range of new toys and select the toys that are on on their child's wish list. Toys are priced between $1 and $5 in keeping with Restoration Ministries' efforts to give a hand up, not just a hand-out. This allows parents to maintain their dignity and gives them a sense of self-sufficiency.

Toyota To Unveil A Racy Tacoma Truck At SEMA Show

Toyota says it will unveil a hot-rod pickup truck called the Tacoma X-Runner RTR at next month’s Specialty Equipment Market Association show in Las Vegas.

The truck, an internal Toyota project, is designed to show the kind of speedy custom vehicles one can build using in-house Toyota parts. It also helps reinforce the car maker’s image as a high-performance brand, not just a purveyor of staid family haulers like the Camry sedan and Sienna minivan.

The Tacoma RTR — as in “ready to race” — is also part of an effort at Toyota to attract younger customers. Certain models in its Scion division, such as the tC coupe, have drawn youthful buyers in part because there are a lot of performance parts available for the car and it is fairly easy to modify. Toyota has designed and sold performance-enhancing parts for years and is trying to raise that business’s profile beyond the Scion cars.

The X-Runnner RTR uses a 5.7-liter V8 engine from the full-size Tundra pickup and a six-speed automatic transmission. A supercharger from Toyota Racing Development (TRD) boosts the truck’s output to 504 horsepower, which is supercar territory.

While the Tacoma RTR has the wide rear tires and skinny front wheels of a drag racer, it also reminds me of the trucks Toyota races on Nascar tracks and in off-road and desert-racing competition. Most of the parts used to build the vehicle are available from Toyota, so putting together something similar wouldn’t be too difficult if you are handy with tools.

Toyota to Make Car Interiors Sweeter.... With Sugarcane!

Toyota has always been a leader in green technology, but now they're going above and beyond to make a difference.

Toyota is planning to make the interiors of its cars from a sugarcane-based material, which drastically reduces the manufacturer's petroleum consumption.

The new vehicle-lining material is made 30 percent from sugarcane. It's more resistant than plastic to wear and tear, as well as heat, according to Toyota.

The first car to be outfitted with this technology will be the Lexus CT200h, which will hit showrooms early next year.

In addition, Toyota will roll out a new vehicle model in which 80 percent of the interior will be made with eco-friendly plant-based plastics next year. Toyota already uses a material derived from corn for floor mats in some of its vehicles.

If other car manufacturers follow Toyota's lead, Toyota figures our planet's greenhouse gases will be reduced significantly.

A new billboard was spotted teasing the newest member of the Prius line-up.

As reported earlier on M Blogee, Toyota has a new, bigger Prius model set to hit showrooms by the end of 2012.

The newest Prius model will have 50 percent more interior room than the 2011 Prius. It will have the space of a Camry, but be built like a wagon.

This latest Prius is becoming more of a reality as billboards are popping up showing glimpses of the new Prius' body style. Look for additional models to join the Prius line-up in the upcoming model years.

Illinois drivers with lead feet better watch out! Starting today, speeding fines increase in the Land of Lincoln.

Drivers caught speeding up to 20 MPH over the posted speed limit will face a fine of $120. That's up from $75.

The cost for going 20 to 30 MPH over the limit climbs from $95 to $140. And if you're going 30 to 40 MPH over you're looking at a $160 fine, up from $105.

The last year Illinois saw an increase in speeding fines was 1993.

Hybrids, Electrics and Batteries... Oh My!

By 2012, Toyota will have 6 all-new hybrid vehicles. And they won't just be updated versions of current models, like the Prius. They will be all-new vehicles with hybrid technology.

Toyota just announced this yesterday via twitter.

Toyota is also working on two plug-in electric cars for 2012. One will be a tiny commuter car and the other will be an electric version on the Rav4. The Rav4 EV is a joint production with Tesla Motors.

Toyota plans on selling a plug-in version of the Prius by 2012 as well.

Lexus CT 200h

Meet the newest full hybrid addition to the Lexus lineup! This is the 2011 Lexus CT 200h and it will get a combined fuel economy rating of 42 MPG.

While Lexus hasn't yet released pricing information on the CT 200h, they're saying that this hybrid will be "a new gateway into Lexus for a younger group of customers."

The CT 200h shares much of its equipment with the Prius and will feature many environmentally-conscious measures like its 1.8-liter 4-cyliner engine teamed with an 80 hp electric motor. The CT 200h will also feature LED lighting, an energy-efficient audio system amplifier and bamboo charcoal speakers.

The CT200h should hit showrooms by spring of 2011.

2011 Tundra Gets More Power

Toyota has added some power to the standard 4.0-liter V6 engine on the 2011 Tundra. The truck is available with a pair of V8 choices, but now the V6 boasts the same dual independent variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i) as the bigger engines.

The 2011 model also has 270 horsepower, up from 236.

2011 Toyota Camry V6 Gets MPG Boost

Looking for performance and fuel economy? Look no further than the 2011 Camry!

New for 2011, the V6 model has lower-rolling resistance tires. That will increase the fuel economy on the V6 to 20 MPG city/29 MPG hwy.

The 4-cylinder model gets 22/32 MPG and the Camry hybrid is rated at 31/35 MPG.

Yaris the Next Hybrid for Toyota?

According to Hybridcars.com, Toyota has plans to build an affordable Yaris Hybrid for Europe. That could mean a U.S. version would soon follow.

Currently, the Yaris gets 29 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway. A hybrid version could get more than 50 mpg, which is better than the Prius.

There's also a rumor that the iQ will have a hybrid version. The iQ is already in Europe, but it won't hit stateside until 2011.

Updated Car Stickers Provide Fuel Economy Grades

Next time you're shopping for a car, you'll probably have an easier time figuring out whether the vehicle you want will help save you money on gas. That's because the U.S. DOT and the EPA are proposing a big change for vehicle window stickers -- something they haven't done in 30 years.

One of the proposed stickers gives vehicles a letter grade (A through D) for fuel economy. For example, electric cars would get an A. Hybrids-- like the Prius-- would receive an A- rating.

The government hopes to have the stickers on car windows by the 2012 model year.

Spotted: 2011 Highlander with a Facelift

The 2011 model has a slightly different front fascia and the rear looks a little different as well.

Man Gets 80 Miles a Gallon with his Prius!

David Sandalow, the Department of Energy assistant secretary for policy and international affairs, drives a plug-in Prius hybrid for his commute to work each day.

According to the Associated Press, Sandalow converted his Prius two years ago to allow him to recharge the battery from an electric outlet. He can drive 30 miles on a single charge and he only fills up his gas tank about twice a month. Sandalow estimates he gets about 80 miles per gallon!

Including the six-hour electric plug-in a day, it works out to be about 75 cents per gallon of gas. It cost him $9,000 for his aftermarket conversion to electric power.

Prius Silent No More

CNET is reporting that the Toyota Prius in Japan will soon be able to be outfitted with a speaker system that will help alert pedestrians when the silent hybrid is coming their way.

Apparently, the device will be mounted under the hood of the car and will emit a "whirring" noise that is barely audible on a loud, busy street, but can be heard in a more quiet setting as to alert pedestrians.

Toyota says the gadget has been released following Japanese government guidelines designed to address the dangers of silent cars. Japan's crowded, narrow streets have a high number of pedestrian deaths compared to many other countries.

Currently, Toyota has no plans to release the speaker system outside of Japan, but says it's keeping its options open.

'Why is My Car Doing This?'

Modern technology in today’s automobiles can cause engine rpm to increase slightly without warning, but don’t panic. There’s a reason for this and once you understand why, you won't be surprised when it happens.

Here are a few examples of these common occurrences from the experts at Toyota:

Cold start idle-up: An increase in engine idle speed normally occurs just after a cold start on the first drive of the day. This high idle speed is a normal condition of a cold engine. The engine idle speed will reduce as the engine warms up.

Transmission shift: When accelerating while driving at a slow to moderate speed, the driver may experience a slight pause, as the transmission downshifts to a lower gear, followed by a notable increase in engine rpm as the vehicle accelerates.

Catalytic converter protection: On some manual transmission models, the engine control computer may keep the engine rpm above idle as the driver shifts between fifth and sixth gears at highway speeds. This momentary rpm increase is designed to enhance the life of the catalytic converter.

Air conditioning idle-up: On vehicles with an engine-driven A/C compressor, the engine idle rpm will increase slightly as the compressor cycles on. This is done to reduce the chance of an engine stall condition due to the increased load being place on it by the operation of the A/C compressor.

Power steering idle-up: On vehicles with engine-driven hydraulic power steering, the driver will note a slight increase in engine idle rpm when the steering wheel is turned while stopped or at low speeds. This is a normal operating condition and is done to reduce the chance of an engine stall due the increased load placed on it by the operation of the power steering pump.

Scion tC Could See More Body-Style Options

A 5-door coupe could be on the horizon, but a convertible was ruled out.

Toyota to Bring Back the Affordable Sports Car

With a price tag of $375,000, maybe the Lexus LF-A (pictured left) isn't exactly affordable, but Toyota says it has already sold all 500 units it plans to produce for the U.S. market.

Don't worry, though, Toyota President Akio Toyoda has big plans for the company and they involve an affordable sports car.

Toyota really hasn't had a true sports car since it stopped producing the Supra in the mid-90s, but that could change with the FT-86. The FT-86 was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in 2009 and is a joint venture with Subaru.

Toyota hasn't yet released the price point on the FT-86, but you can be sure it won't be in the six-figure range! It's set to hit showrooms in 2011.

Scion has redesigned the new tC for 2011. The sporty coupe is a little bigger and faster than its predecessor, but it's going to get better gas mileage.

Electric Rav4 on the Horizon

Toyota is teaming up with Tesla Motors to develop an Electric Rav4 that could hit showrooms in two years.

The automakers are already testing a prototype of the electric Rav4. Toyota supplied the body and other major components of the vehicle and Tesla is supplying the battery system and the electric power train.

There's no word on what the new Rav4 EV will sell for.

Toyota ranks number one in four segment awards in J.D. Power and Associate's 2010 Dependability Study-- that's more than any other nameplate!

The Highlander, Prius, Sequoia and Tundra received top honors, while the Corolla, 4Runner, Solara, Yaris and Sienna took home second place in their respective segments.
